Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Health Testing?
A. Our parents are DNA tested for ARVC & DM to help us avoid producing ARVC & DM at risk offspring, and significantly reduce the gene frequency in future generations by helping to eliminate carriers from the breeding pool to better the breed for the future. This method of using selective breeding practices does not rule out the possibility of ARVC or DM; as it is believed especially with ARVC, that there may be more than one mutation in the Boxer breed that may lead to the disease in some lines of dogs. Rather, it is used as a tool to lessen the occurrence in current offspring and to minimize the occurrence of these diseases in future generations.
Q. What is ARVC & DM?
A. ARVC (Boxer Cardiomyopathy) is an inherited electrical conduction defect that causes an arrhythmia, or irregular heart beat. The affected heart does not pump blood efficiently, leading to changes in the heart muscle that can cause fainting and sudden death.
DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) is a degenerative disease of the spinal cord, characterized by muscle weakness in the hind limbs eventually leading to paraplegia.
